Minnie Driver Takes Winding Road To Kari Lizers NBC Comedy Pilot

TV-produced project is about two life-long female friends who are living very different lives but couldnt live without each other. Nicole (Anders) has everything going for her.Her best friend, Jen (Driver), has parents who have no faith in her, terrible instincts that led her to a 17-day marriage to a guy who dumped her, and she gained 15 pounds on the cabbage soup diet. And yet, somehow, she is Nicoles rock. Lady Friends landed Driver in a nail-biter, after a month-long pursuit. The producers cast the other lead, Anders, at the beginning of February when they also identified Driver as the choice for Jen. The problem was that Driver was under a talent deal at ABC, which would not release her. Executives and agents tried persuasion, which didn’t work. Then the network, NBC, used gamesmanship in the form of some good old horse trading. ABC wanted Kal Penn, who had a talent deal at NBC, to star in its comedy pilot Prairie Dogs. NBC offered to release Penn from his deal if ABC would let Driver go so she could do Lady Friends. That didn’t work either. (Penn did end up doing Prairie Dogs.) In the end, patience and perseverance paid off. ABC finally released Driver and she quickly closed a deal with Warner Bros. for Lady Friends. The Oscar-nominated former Riches star is with CAA and Untitled.

Justin Bieber Gets The Movie Career He's Always Wanted

The MTV Movies team doesn't write about Justin Bieber very often — pop music's not necessarily our forte — but recently there's been a lot of talk about his ambitions for a serious acting career. That's something we do know a thing or two about. At least, that's what we tell ourselves. Word has it that Bieber wants to mirror the career of another musician-turned-actor, Mark Wahlberg. The two are even collaborating on a "Color of Money"-esque basketball drama, with Wahlberg playing the wise veteran to Bieber's cocky rookie. Based on his infamous role on "CSI" and the rumors about a "Fear" remake, Bieber wants to go dark and shirk the mantle of the fresh-faced pop star in favor of a tough-guy acting persona. Objectively speaking, he's got a bit to go before pulling "dark" off without unintentional laughs. In honor of Justin's 18th birthday, MTV Movies feels obligated to give back to the boy who's given so much to us. We've mapped out where Bieber should be by his next few birthdays to overcome his image problem and have the acting career he wants. March 1, 2013 - Age: 19 First of all, take this slow. You can't go from "Baby" to girlfriend stalker that quickly. No one will believe you. Skip "Fear 2: The Fearening." Make that basketball movie. Don't act too "hard," and chill out for a few years. March 1, 2016 - Age: 22 You've got acting cred now thanks to Wahlberg. Don't waste it. You're next step is a young guy reluctantly thrown into a life of crime. You're looking to make a DiCaprio-esque transition here. This is your "Catch Me If You Can." March 1, 2019 - Age: 25 Hopefully the baby face is gone by now. Drop out of the spotlight for a while, put on some muscle, get a tattoo. Hell, grow a beard if you can. Now you get to play a criminal, the only catch being that he is essentially a good guy. This is where Wahlberg is king. March 1, 2021 - Age: 27 Here's a little bit of strategy for you. Overreach. Join an indie movie that wouldn't have a wide release without you. Go too dark. Play a straight-up killer, no remorse, but make sure it's a good movie. (Always make sure.) There will be backlash, but that's all part of the plan. March 1, 2023 - Age: 29 Come out of hiding after upsetting the masses with your last movie. Now it's time to win them back. Go for the Oscar with another sports movie. Here's your "Fighter." It can be basketball, bowling, doesn't matter. The character just has to make a comeback mirroring your own. March 1, 2026 - Age: 32 By now, you've worked out your niche. If you're following Wahlberg, you're the reluctant tough guy, who will do anything for his family, America or justice. Work that niche, rinse and repeat for years to come.

U.K. cracks down on film tax fraud

LONDON -- The U.K. tax authorities have arrested several British bankers on suspicion of using investments in film production to illegally evade tax. According to a report in the Financial Times, investigators for H.M. Revenue and Customs arrested four current and one former employee of the Royal Bank of Scotland at their homes last week, along with several employees from two other unnamed banks. The arrests relate to the private financial affairs of the bankers, rather than to any film investment schemes run by the banks themselves. It is not known which film investment schemes are implicated in the investigation. The U.K. government has progressively tightened the rules governing tax relief for film investment over a period of several years, to make it harder for wealthy individuals to use film production vehicles as a mechanism for avoiding tax. Under current rules, anyone investing more than 25,000 ($39,500) into film must prove that they are actively involved in the production, in order to write off the investment against tax. They must show that they spend more than 10 hours a week working on the production. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Jackson: Film Saved Information On West Memphis 3 Suspect

First Launched: The month of the month of january 22, 2012 1:27 PM EST Credit: Getty Images PARK CITY, Utah -- Caption Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson poses for just about any portrait through the 2012 Sundance Film Festival within the Getty Images Portrait Studio at T-Mobile Village within the Lift in Park City, Utah, around the month of the month of january 20, 2012Peter Jackson thinks Damien Echols might be dead otherwise for just about any 1996 documentary that cast doubt round the men guilt in three child killings. And Amy Berg, Jacksons friend round the Sundance Film Festival premiere West of Memphis, thinks former Dying Row inmate Echols and a pair of other males can always maintain prison otherwise for your independent analysis launched with the Master in the Rings filmmaker and also the wife, Fran Walsh. There's no better testament at Sundance for the energy of art and artists than West of Memphis, which opened up Friday evening at Robert Redfords independent-film showcase. Sundance films frequently result from mavericks who challenge the establishment. West of Memphis can be a tale of artists not only challenging the device, but furthermore beating it. Jackson, Walsh and Berg mentioned West of Memphis comes lower towards the fair trial Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley known to as West Memphis Three never got as Arkansas teens after they were billed in 1994. We went into this case thinking they didnt take action, as well as the particulars as well as the evidence we showed up in this area within the conclusion completely supported that, Jackson mentioned inside an interview. Same goes with the documentary type of delivering the prosecutions perspective? No, it's not. Were not interested because. They'd their use 1994. The documentary, it's the situation in the condition, really. The problem will be a surprise inside the rural Arkansas community where 8-year-old Cub Scouts Michael Moore, Steve Branch and Christopher Byers were slain in 1993. Found naked and hogtied, a few the boys drowned in the drainage ditch, because the third bled to dying, his sex organs mutilated, evidence prosecutors familiar with claim the children were destroyed in the satanic ritual. The accused were billed based simply around the confession Misskelley later recanted. Misskelley and Baldwin were sentenced to existence jail time, while Echols was condemned to dying so when came within times of execution. The problem increased being a reason after Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofskys documentary Paradise Lost: The Little One Killings at Robin Hood Slopes, which opened up at Sundance in 1996 and requested whether justice or misguided public opinion was offered inside the trial. Over time, stars for instance The Actor-kaira Pitt, Patti Cruz, Eddie Vedder of Jewel Jam and Natalie Maines in the Dixie Chicks grew to become part of your time and energy to free the males. Jackson and Walsh seen Paradise Lost in 2005 and were annoyed inside the situation. Utilizing their home base in Nz, they provided connection with with Lorri Davis, who had met and married Echols because they was on Dying Row and was leading the ideal to free the males. Justice needs to be beyond popular opinion, too as with this case, it wasn't, Walsh mentioned. Typically the most popular opinion was these males were guilty, therefore, theyre heading lower. It might be a done deal. Over the following six years, Jackson and Walsh funded their unique analysis, employing forensics experts, gathering DNA evidence and looking out for witnesses to demonstrate the prosecution had billed innocent males. The means by which Peter and Fran just attacked the problem, it made us appear like we'd expect the very first time, Echols, 37, mentioned inside an interview alongside Davis. Anticipation was well-founded. Aided by evidence Jackson and Walshs analysis collected, the problem made an appearance headed toward a retrial. Then last August, both sides made the decision for an uncommon legal maneuver through which Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley became a member of guilty pleas that allowed those to maintain their innocence and gain their freedom for amount of time in jail already offered. Lots of people in Arkansas, like the number of one of the wiped out boys, still believe the three men're guilty. Yet over time, the particular groups of some other two dead boys increased being thinking that prosecutors assaulted the wrong suspects. Mother of just one boy and stepfather of one other found Sundance, talking about hugs within the premiere with Echols, who mentioned hes very happy to contact them pals now. three years for their analysis, Jackson and Walsh contacted director Berg, whose 2006 priest-molestation documentary Deliver Us from Evil acquired an Academy Award nomination. Berg signed onto direct West of Memphis, which traces the 18-year good status for that situation featuring interviews with Jackson and many witnesses and experts he and Walsh labored with. I'd submit this film towards the court, so thats how strongly Personally i consider this, mentioned Davis, a producer round the film along with Echols, Jackson and Walsh. The film also evolves a scenario the stepfather of one of the wiped out boys needs to be investigated. Jackson mentioned that without Paradise Lost, 'Damien might be dead at this time, so I'm sure that film saved his existence. AndIm wanting our movie goes a means toward exoneration and catching the person that destroyed people three kids. Walsh and Jackson stop missing saying their efforts introduced for the relieve Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley. Yet Berg thinks evidence brought to light by Jackson and Walsh was crucial. Without any discovery in the DNA, there's no method that these males might be walking free, which came a good deal from Peter and Fran in addition to their analysis, Berg mentioned. Since his release, Echols has were living a nomadic existence with Davis. He visited Nz to visit the audience of Jackson and Walshs approaching Master in the Rings prequel The Hobbit and contains been remaining together with other pals while attempting to choose his future. Spielberg: Empire in the stunner

'Jaws''Super 8''War Horse'When Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" showed up ashore inside the summer season of '75, it marked a sea change. Not only managed to get happen give birth for the modern blockbuster, nevertheless the impact of Spielberg -- this year's Producers Guild of America's David O. Selznick honoree for lifetime achievement -- was immediate, and also the impact on movies and moviemakers continues unabated."That was my first Spielberg experience," states J.J. Abrams, who recalls the "Jaws" effect on his boyhood. "That movie made enormous impact. Not way back when, I used to be putting my boy to bed mattress, which i gave him this lacquered wooden plaque that we had made just like a grade school project. I'd made mine while using 'Jaws' poster. That's what size that movie is ideal for me.""Jaws" wasn't the initial film to breach the $100 million milestone stateside (that could be "The Godfather"), though a 1975 tally of $260 million -- greater than $1 billion today modified for inflation -- it established a completely new benchmark, and acquired greater than two occasions connected having a film released that year. The web effect on Abrams might be noticed in the filmmaker's "Super 8," that's, while he terms it, an "unabashed" tribute to both Spielberg especially to "E.T.," another Spielbergian Saturday-matinee movie whose importance has allowed additionally, it to become regarded as as an even more serious, Saturday-evening movie. It's this capability to accept tropes of matinee entertainments and pitch them into high relief, getting a film brio and audacity to supply images, effects and occasions on-screen that have no time before been done, that possibly most distinguishes Spielberg's behave as a producer and director.Without films like "Jaws," "E.T.," "Raiders in the Lost Ark" and "Jurassic Park," it may be difficult to imagine films like "Avatar," "Transformers," "The Master in the Rings" and "Pirates in the Caribbean." It's as if Spielberg established how do people permit filmmakers like James Cameron and Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson, with whom he labored with on "The Adventures of Tintin," to goal for that moon.Even if Oscar best pic champion "Schindler's List" (1993) cast Spielberg in the more serious light, the gravity and weight of the Holocaust drama was counterbalanced by "Jurassic Park," released the identical year. "Jurassic" challenged the competition on CGI making $47 million its opening weekend, going onto earn an infrequent $900,000-plus worldwide. So far, Speilberg's movies, whether he produced, professional produced or directed, have acquired nearly $8.5 billion within the U . s . States alone.Abrams themselves finds the most effective, briefest term for Spielberg's talent: "He's a showman. Meaning whether he's the director or he's in the creating capacity like he was with me at night on 'Super 8,' he's aware of delivering a movie that mixes feelings, interesting figures and ideas, but furthermore most importantly else entertains which is a crowd-pleaser. And he's certainly the best impact on me for the reason."The most popular movies," Abrams adds, "are B movies done A. Therefore it may be easy to remember fondly the shark attacks in 'Jaws,' but can you explain that movie great would be the strong moments involving the figures, the sheriff (carried out by Roy Scheider), Robert Shaw's fantastic moments incorporated.InchAn additional movie that Spielberg executive-produced last summer season, the Jon Favreau-directed "Cowboys & Aliens," also happily flies in Spielberg's space within the good-natured combo in the western and sci-fi genres -- even though, surprising since it is, Spielberg has not themselves developed a western."He was my mentor," states Favreau, "as well as the primary reason I needed round the project was that Steven was creating, enabling me an incredible opportunity to operate side-by-affiliate with him, and learn. We result from really different abilities -- me from improv and comedy, him from cinema -- which i preferred to merely eat the ideas, along with the means by that they exercised his work."However, Spielberg doesn't view his role as producer using the lens from the mentor, but just like a company."I'm sure my purpose after i am creating is always to supply the full weight of my support for the director I've hired," according to him. "I am in a position to work on acquiring the director what he wants, once the director knows what he wants, which sometimes does not occur prior to the day's shooting."Since "developing a movie is regarded as the fluid talent in the world,In . Spielberg states, "things work and things fail 10 occasions every day. I am in a position to help a director by using experienced personnel (production managers, assistant company company directors, location managers) who'll use me to set up a production with plenty of contingencies just just in case of foul weather or possibly a disease or mechanical complete complete breakdowns, the director never must be concerned about plotting people solutions. An excellent producer knows how you can launched fires extended just before the director ever smells the smoke. It's likewise important will be able to help get everybody from (his) way, including myself."Favreau, like Abrams, states Spielberg producer is ever-conscious and packed with ideas and enthusiasm when he's inside the room together with you. Through the phases when both company company directors were making their movies, Spielberg was either planning or pointing both "War Equine" and "Tintin," which causes it to be much more amazing they echo each others' view that Spielberg labored together "as if he'd very little else to accomplish but this," states Favreau."Just like a gift, he provided an iPad loaded tabs on classic Westerns," the actor-director adds, "so that it was as being a film school coping with him. He examined 'The Searchers' for people, since the primary story in 'Cowboys & Aliens' borrows within the mission plot because film, which he did a running commentary after we seen it.""Steven is very positive," states Abrams. "He's someone who's able to seeing the most effective version of whatever project he's concentrating on. She's enormous ambition of products to go to their utmost, but a few things i found is always that because they features a constant capacity to assume moments in no time and possibly make certain they're better, more youthful crowd is actually able and sense not to mandate people suggestions. He'll permit you to consider his ideas, and bring them, alter them or else. It's like if you were a young child and bought the bottomless chocolate milk. He's similar to this bottomless idea factory."Favreau and Abrams both understand that Spielberg producer never cites Spielberg the director, but instead mentions previous Hollywood masters and models -- his idols, similar to Spielberg may be the idol."He doesn't mention his movies once we talk," Favreau notes, "but he'll mention John Ford constantly, or males like Billy Wilder. In my opinion he's inherited Ford's DNA."Abrams stresses that Spielberg would "make an effort to stress that, even though I used to be developing a movie that originated from their very own movies, with moments and figures that totally parallel people in 'E.T.,' he didn't develop these products to start with, but was using others."While helmers who've labored with Spielberg can hardly stop talking about his collaborative habits, Spielberg themselves states you'll find distinct limits with this: "There are many space for collaboration, but no room more than one chef with the food prep.InchPGA NOMINATIONS:"The ArtistThomas LangmannPedigree*: Cesar nom for "Mesrine: Public Enemy #1" and "Mesrine: Killer Instinct" (2008)2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Alliance of girls Film Journalists Boston Society of Film Experts Detroit Film Experts European Film Award nom Golden Globe (musical/comedy) Independent Spirit Honours nom Indiana Film Experts Las vegas Film Experts Society NY Film Experts Circle NY Film Experts Online Hillcrest Film Experts Screen Stars Guild nom (ensemble cast) St. Louis Film Experts Vancouver Film Experts Circle Washington, D.C., Area Film Experts Assn."BridesmaidsJudd Apatow, Craig Mendel and Clayton TownsendPedigree: Mendel Oscar-nominated for "Munich" (2005) and "The Sixth Sense" (1999), additionally to some BAFTA nom ("Sixth Sense") 2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Broadcast Film Experts Assn. nom (Comedy Movie) Golden Globes nom (comedy/musical) Screen Stars Guild nom (ensemble cast)"The Descendants"Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim TaylorPedigree: N/A2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Broadcast Film Experts Assn. nom Dallas-Fort Worth Film Experts Golden Globe (drama) Houston Film Experts Society Might Film Experts La Film Experts Satellite Honours Screen Stars Guild nom (ensemble cast) Southeastern Film Experts"The Woman While using Dragon TattooCean Chaffin and Scott RudinPedigree: Three Oscar noms then one win ("No Country for Old Males," 2007), and three PGA noms then one win ("No Country") for Rudin two Oscar noms and a pair of PGA noms for Chaffin. 2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: N/A"The HelpMichael Barnathan, Chris Columbus and Brunson GreenPedigree: N/A2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Golden Globes nom Screen Stars Guild nom (ensemble cast)"HugoGraham King and Martin ScorsesePedigree: Three Cesar noms together with a PGA nom for Scorsese two Oscar noms then one win ("The Departed, 2006)" and a pair of PGA noms together with victory ("The Aviator," 2004) for King. 2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Austin Film Experts Golden Globes nom National Board of Review"The Ides of MarchGeorge Clooney, Grant Heslov and John OliverPedigree: Heslov Oscar-nominated and PGA-nominated for "Evening, and finest Of LuckInch (2005) Oliver Oscar-nominated and PGA-nominated for "Black Swan" (2010)2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Golden Globes nom"Evening amount of time in ParisLetty Aronson and Stephen TenenbaumPedigree: N/A2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Golden Globes nom Screen Stars Guild nom (ensemble cast)"MoneyballMichael P Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Kaira PittPedigree: P Luca Oscar-nominated and PGA-nominated for "The Social MediaInch (2010) Horovitz won the PGA award for "Grey Gardens" (2009)2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Golden Globes nom"War HorseKathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg Pedigree: Kennedy has six Oscar noms, three noms together with an eternity acheivement award (2008) within the PGA, and four BAFTA noms Spielberg has five Oscar noms then one win ("Shindler's List," 1993), five Cesar honours then one honorary award and three noms, six wins together with an eternity achievement award within the PGA. 2011 Best pic honours, noms so far: Golden Globes nom AFI Award* Refers only to best pic honours and noms within the Academy, PGA, HFPA, BAFTA and CesarsPGA AWARDSSpielberg: Empire in the stunner Extended-gestating 'Lincoln' driven by performances Guild draws line on producer credit Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

The last divergence came in 2002, when Rob Marshall won the DGA Award for "Chicago" while Roman Polanski received the Academy Award for "The Pianist."The DGA nominations have matched the Oscar noms about 80% of the time. Last year the DGA tapped Hooper and Fincher along with Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan"), Christopher Nolan ("Inception") and David O. Russell ("The Fighter") while the Oscar noms went to Aronofsky, Fincher, Hooper and Russell along with Joel and Ethan Coen for "True Grit."The directors branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has 369 members, or about 6% of the total membership of 5,783. Oscar noms will be announced Jan. 24. The DGA has about 14,500 members, including TV helmers, assistant directors, unit production managers and stage managers.Only once has a director won the DGA award and not been Oscar-nommed -- in 1995, when Ron Howard was honored by the guild for "Apollo 13" but was passed over by the Academy. The DGA will announce its TV nominations Tuesday and documentary noms on Thursday.
